The idea

If you regularly watch videos at a different speed, adjusting the player again and again gets old. YT Auto Speed gives that preference a home: choose a speed in the extension popup and let it apply to regular YouTube videos as you browse.

What it does

  • A playback-speed slider from 0.25× to 2.0×, with 1.25× as the default.
  • An on/off toggle and preferences saved between browser sessions.
  • Automatic speed adjustment when navigating between regular videos, designed to leave Shorts alone.

Behind the build

The popup uses HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A content script reads the saved settings and passes them to code running alongside YouTube's player.

The interesting part is navigation: YouTube can switch videos without reloading the whole page. The extension listens for that transition, waits for the player to be ready, and applies the chosen speed through the player's playback controls.

Keeping it simple

The extension stores its enabled state and speed preference locally in Firefox. The current code includes no analytics or external data requests; its permissions cover YouTube pages and browser storage.
